At our Potomac Dental Centre office located in Hagerstown, Maryland, we completely understand that there are lots of patients out there who get anxious about seeing the dentist, whether it’s just a lingering unsettled feeling or outright fear with sweaty hands. If you or a family member get nervous when seeing the dentist, rest assured, you are not alone!
Calming dental anxiety is one of the reasons we offer nitrous, oral conscious sedation, or IV sedation to help our patients feel comfortable during their time in the chair, with IV and nitrous sedation make up the bulk of these options. New patients especially come in fearful, as they’ve never experienced our services before, or they have had an unpleasant experience with their previous dentists.
Prompt dental care is important to stay on top of your oral health, so our skilled dentist, Dr. Everett Eklund, and our team want to make sure your smile gets the treatment you need as soon as possible. Delaying needed dental treatment typically allows the condition to worsen and often increases the cost. Thankfully, our sedation options have helped our dental patients to have the most comfortable treatment possible.
You can be assured that our hygienists have the licensing they need to administer your nitrous sedation during a routine or deep cleaning so you can relax comfortably but also drive yourself home right after your treatment. We also offer a deeper state of sedative relaxation if you struggle with severe phobias. That’s where our IV sedation option comes in. You can have someone bring you to your appointment and take you home afterward, and you likely won’t remember much of your time in the chair. Instead, you can focus on relaxing and having a positive dental experience.
Dr. Eklund is happy to review your treatment beforehand where your fears or concerns are addressed. Your health history will also be taken into account when determining your sedation option to find the one that will suit you the best. We want to make sure your time in the chair will be a positive and comfortable experience.
-Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas: This sedative gas is mixed together with oxygen which you will breathe in through the nose mask delivering the sedative. You will feel calm and relaxed while still staying aware and conscious of what is happening around you. Once the treatment is completed, the nose mask is removed and within minutes the sedative effect is gone so you can drive yourself home.
-Oral sedation: This sedative is administered by taking a prescribed pill before your appointment. You will need to have someone drive you to and from your dental appointment. Once you arrive, you will feel calm, relaxed and at ease. Once the sedative wears off you can go about your normal daily routine.
-IV sedation: This sedation option is delivered directly into your veins. While you are receiving your dental treatment chairside, our dentist can safely adjust the amount of sedative needed to keep you comfortable. You will still be conscious while you are under but like many of our patients, you might fall asleep because you are so relaxed. After you awake, you can be safely driven home by a friend or family member.
